Why Praying Can Help Even If You’ve Never Done It Before

By Rabbi Joseph B. Meszler

When facing illness, whether in our own life or the life of another, the greatest spiritual tool at our disposal is prayer. It is a tool that is not used often enough, however, because many people are uncomfortable with the idea. “I’m just not the praying type,” we might say.

Despite our reservations, prayer appears to be a human need. It is a natural thing for people to worship in some fashion. Although I know of no scientific study, I would bet that the act of prayer is and has been a part of every culture in the world throughout history. Despite this natural inclination, modern men and women often find it difficult or awkward to pray. They feel embarrassed or self-conscious. Perhaps it is the feeling of being ignorant of or estranged from religious ritual or language. Perhaps it is the direct way prayer asks us to display emotion. Perhaps it is simply something that we never did growing up or never saw our parents do.

Nevertheless, we sometimes pray, despite ourselves. When we exhale in relief that a danger has passed us by, when we stumble for words to show our amazement at a landscape, or when we put our hands over our hearts and invoke God to keep our country safe, whether we realize it or not, we are praying. Certainly when we face illness, religion naturally presents itself, whether from a concerned loved one or a neighbor, a chaplain dropping by, or a religious symbol in a hospital.

Prayer is simply talking to God, either out loud with our mouths or silently in our heads. Prayer is an expression of the soul, and it does not much matter what form that expression takes.

Psychologists and other professionals have long understood the value of simply talking, of trying to articulate thoughts and emotions. There is therapeutic value in telling personal stories, letting out feelings, and knowing that there is a listening ear. Perhaps we might grow in maturity and self-awareness as a result.

Talking to God, however, implies all of this and more. In addition to the benefits of expressing your feelings, you also acknowledge and address something larger than yourself that puts your life in perspective. Praying is, by its very nature, an unequal conversation. You as a speaker pray to a greater listener. By praying, you do more than talk. You let yourself enter into a relationship where you are the smaller party. Your pain, your challenges, and your growth are put up against that larger universe and the Source from which we all come.

In a way, by praying, you “decentralize” yourself. Much of the time, it is natural to think of yourself as the center of your own universe. We are all preoccupied with our problems, made ever more real by our suffering. We can even sulk and stew. By praying, however, you willingly take yourself out of the middle and acknowledge that there is an Other who is present at all times, the true center of existence. Rather than the planets, sun, moon, and stars revolving around you, you acknowledge that you are the one who revolves around God.

A woman recently told me of a plaque that she has in her office that reads, “Please retire from being the CEO of the universe.” We do not have to understand everything, fix everything, and control everything. We just have to respond to life in a way that is fitting in the eyes of God.

Meszler, is from Facing Illness, Finding God; How Judaism Can Help You and Caregivers Cope When Body or Spirit Fails © 2010 by Joseph B. Meszler. Permission granted by Jewish Lights Publishing, P.O.
