When you enter the land that the Lord your God is giving you as a heritage, and you possess it and settle in it, you shall take some of every first fruit of the soil, which you harvest from the land that the Lord your God is giving you, put it in a basket and go to the place where the Lord your God will choose to establish God’s name. You shall go to the priest in charge at that time and say to him, “I acknowledge this day before the Lord our God that I have entered the land that the Lord swore to our parents to assign us.” (Deuteronomy 26:1–3)

Prayer only sounds as if you’re talking to God. In truth, prayer is reciting the words of a script evolved and evolving over the centuries that gives form to the inchoate yearnings of your innermost being. There is nothing new to say in prayer. Surely God has “heard it all before.” What you need to do in order to pray is surrender your own expressions of gratitude and petition to the syntax of tradition. Only one who can allow the annulment of his or her self is capable of being transformed through the words of prayer, the lines of the script. As long as you cling to your discreet selfhood, you will be unable to transcend your self and your prayers will go “unanswered.” For this reason the key to unlocking our most important songs is the script recorded in the prayer book.

Of course, like any good actor, occasional ad libs, inflationary modifications, and even forgetting one’s lines at times are part of the business. Even the sensation of improvisation has a place, as long as you remember that your “new creation” has already been recited by the Heavenly retinue since before the creation of the world. The script, in other words, is present whether or not the “play” is performed in a human prayer hall.

You need to think of yourself as nothing. Forget yourself entirely. Pray only for the sake of God’s Presence. Only then will you come to transcend time and attain the “World of Thought.” No contradictions. No distinctions between life and death or sea and dry land. All the same….This can only happen if you forget yourself entirely. But it cannot be the case while you are attached to the tangible reality of this world. Fixated on the distinctions between good and evil and mundane creation. How otherwise could one possibly transcend time and attain ultimate unification? Thus as long as you remain convinced that you are “something,” preoccupied with your daily needs, then the Holy One cannot be present, for God is without end, that is, “nothing,” no vessel can contain the One. But this is not so when you think of yourself as nothing.

You cannot set out to put yourself out of the way, any more than you can set as your goal the attainment of love or a sense of community. Such gifts are a coincidental side effect of working with others toward a common goal, caring for a partner through difficult times, or praying regularly. In prayer, of course, the trick is to balance the routine with novelty. You need to know the “script” so well that you can recite the words on “auto pilot” but not so well that the words are habitual. You must know them well enough that you do not really need the prayer book, yet maintain enough “presence” that the words stream forth fresh, as if you have never spoken them before. In this way you remain balanced on the edge. It does not have to be the entire liturgy; even a single prayer, recited each morning, can serve as a proper beginning. In this way you can make a prayer your own that has been recited for centuries.
