Medicine, Prayer and Hope

By Rabbi Lawrence A. Hoffman, PhD

Out of narrow straits I have called out to God,
God answered me with wide open spaces.
Psalm 118:5

Our tradition believes in science. Unlike those faiths that either deny modern medicine or accept it suspiciously, Judaism sees the hand of God in every aspirin and x-ray. According to the Talmud, it is even forbidden to live in a town where no physicians reside. Proper doctors, moreover, should combine scientific know-how with humility before the divine web of scientific data they discover and interpret.

“The best of doctors,” says the Talmud, “is fit for hell!” “The best” here means, as one interpretation advises, “doctors who think they are so good that they need no help from God” or even “doctors who are so high and mighty that they never even consult with each other.” So find doctors who are medically superb but properly humble.

Do not be afraid to pray for healing. Many modern Jews are so thoroughly secularized that they cannot pray for themselves, let alone with and for patients whom they love, but they usually wish that they could. Do we really know all about the factors that go into healing? Or into just plain comforting, for that matter? How many times, while visiting the acutely ill, have you been unable to say anything except “How are you feeling today?”—as if you don’t already know?

If the patient is willing to say a prayer with you, then try saying one. If you don’t know one, make one up. If you can’t say it out loud, hold the patient’s hand and say it silently. You may cry, but with tears of love. And when the tears end, you will both feel better. You will return home knowing that for a brief moment you were a physician of the soul and in touch with the depths of human mystery.

Never give up hope, even as you necessarily prepare for the end. As Job well knew, it is not true that if we were only good enough, God would reward us with a cure. We therefore do not have the power, through either medicine or prayer, to bring healing everywhere and always.

The final lesson, then, if we see all efforts failing, is not to despair. Miracles do happen; they are cures that occur when physicians shrug their shoulders and words of prayer stick in their throats. So when all else fails, we are to do two things: We prepare ourselves and the patient for death, even while we hope for a miracle.

Medicine, prayer, and hope—these are Jewish mandates. I have pondered those certainties many times sitting in the hospital, watching generations come and go. But the cycle of birth, sickness, recovery—and yes, eventually death—does not change. Medicine, prayer, and hope are the Jewish way through illness.
