Practical Tips for Preparing for Prayer

By Dr. Erica Brown

Minimizing boredom in prayer is largely a matter of proper preparation. In a famous responsum of the sixteenth century, halakhic authority Rabbi David ibn Zimra writes of the importance of praying only when you are serene and in a good temper. He also recommends that you pray in a place where you are socially accepted and not in contention with others and where your heart desires to be with people who can inspire. He even recommends gazing or imagining a person you respect to help you achieve better focus: “When a man looks at his friend or his relative or his teacher or one who pleases him, his soul is awakened to an elevated degree of concentration and an additional spirit on high rests upon him.”

Think of a role model when you pray. We watch people to improve our skills all the time, from athletes to cooking shows on television. And yet, how many of us can say that we have a mentor in prayer, a personal trainer to achieve spiritual goals?

Maimonides, a medieval philosopher and physician, advises that certain practical acts of preparation take place before praying to enhance the experience. They work well both within and outside of the synagogue experience. Maimonides, in “Laws of Prayer,” combs through the Talmud and recommends the following behaviors:

  • Using proper posture and positioning.
  • Facing the direction of the ancient Temple once housed in Jerusalem before its destruction.
  • Physically preparing the body before prayer, like relieving yourself, to avoid physical distraction.
  • Fixing your clothing so that you look fit to pray and feel unencumbered.
  • Situating yourself with a place to pray so that ideally you return to the same place and create a sacred space for yourself. This may inspire quiet meditation and offer some psychic if not a real modicum of privacy. Maimonides also advises removing any bad-smelling material and distancing yourself from malodorous distractions.
  • Preparing your voice so that you can enunciate words properly without, at the same time, being a disturbance to a neighbor.
  • Readying yourself for bowing, a physical accompaniment and gesture of humility during prayer. While we may have limited physical gestures in today’s modern service, those that we do have should be done, according to Maimonides, with thoughtfulness and preparation.

Translating these into modern prayer behaviors is not difficult. We understand that we have to minimize distraction for any meaningful encounter and maximize our ability to appreciate wonder, to create harmony with God, and to be in consonance with our surroundings. Each of Maimonides’ suggestions also involves different senses because smells, sounds, and sights can either help enhance wonder or inhibit it completely. There is a centeredness that Maimonides emphasizes in this passage that sensitizes us to the role of place and location in prayer. Pick the wrong seat and you’ve practically kissed a good prayer opportunity goodbye. Seating yourself next to the shul yenta or the friend who has not made personal hygiene a priority was probably a mistake.
