Paying Attention to Moments of Transition

By Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson, DHL

We are touched at night. . . . There are night thoughts and night imaginings. There are certainties of the night that can be shaken by nothing except the coming of the dawn. Fear is a night child. So is faith.
Rabbi David Wolpe

The night is a time of transition: The retreating light of day turns into the darkness of the night sky, the alertness of being awake turns to comforting rest and sleep. Each evening we go through this transition, surrendering our watchfulness and inquisitiveness for quiet, vulnerability, and inwardness.

As we let go of one mode of living and embrace another, there is always the possibility that we will fall through the cracks in between. That’s why rituals tend to congregate at transitions—at the doorposts of our houses, at the day that ends the week, at the moment before sleep.

Any parent can report that children feel most anxious at night. That is why they develop elaborate bedtime rituals. Without the right stuffed animals in bed, the window opened or shut just so, the right words and songs, many children refuse to sleep. Adults aren’t that different. They may lie awake for hours reviewing the day’s events or planning for the next day. Few of us can claim never to have experienced anxiety or fear during these hours.

Judaism provides a lovely and simple ritual to ease the soul into sleep. It provides for some structure and repetition while also reminding us that no Jew is ever alone, that we are connected to a web of other Jewish souls across the globe and throughout time, and that we sleep under God’s watchful care.

That ritual is the recitation of the Shema just prior to sleep. What a lovely way for parents to ease their children’s fear before sleep. What a lovely opportunity to assist them in learning to pray to God: By asking God to remember loved ones and friends, or by thanking God for the highlights of the day that just ended.

What a lovely way for adults, too, to end each day reminding ourselves of God’s love and the privilege of being Jews.

This prayer is the perfect vehicle to take us to a restful night, to teach our children that they are not alone, to remind us of who we really are. Won’t you try reciting the Shema tonight: Shema Yisrael Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad, Hear O Israel, the Eternal is Our God, the Eternal is One.
